Education:

1980 graduate form medical school (Ege University Faculty of Medicine) in Izmir

1986 finished neurosurgery residency program at the same university

 

Fellowhsip:

1987-1988, with a German grant from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Neurosurgery Department of University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, (Dr.J.Schramm), worked on clinical and experimental studies related to spinal cord monitoring.

1996-1997, short term spine fellowships in University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, U.S.A. (Dr.E.C.Benzel) and Dept.of Neurosurgery, Barrow Neurological Institute, Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A. (Dr.VKH Sonntag)

 

Awards and grants:

1974, received an educational grant of "Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council" for university students till finishing the medical faculty in 1980.

1987, received a grant from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn, Germany, and worked in the Department of Neurosurgery, University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, between November 1987 and December 1988, under the supervision of Prof.Dr.J.Schramm.

1989, the second prize winner of “Poster Presentations Award” of 40th Congress of German Neurosurgical Society, 1989

1989, the first prize winner of a national award, "Neurological Sciences Research Competition”

 

Teaching:

Organizing annual hands-on practical courses on spine surgery since 1997; this year 5th Course on 25-27 October 2002.

Director of the host institute of “Travelling Fellowship of Spine Society of Europe”, 16-17 May 2002, and upcoming course in May-June 2003.

 

Faculty member: He is the faculty member of neurosurgery department, former President of the Spine Section of Turkish Neurosurgical Association (1995-99), former Vise President (1993-95) of the Turkish Society of Clinical Neurophysiology and EEG-EMG.

 

Current position and interest: He works as a Professor of Neurosurgery in Ege University since 1996, takes active role in clinical activities and operation room. Neurosurgery Department of Ege University has a 65 beds clinic and an average 1500 operations per year. He has special interest in spine tumors, cervical spondylotic myelopathy, degenerative conditions, spinal cord monitoring and pain surgery. He also gives time for research activity on subjects “spinal cord monitoring in rats” and “adjacent level cervical spondylosis in a rabbit model”.

 

Spine Fellowship Programs:

He has conducted 3 months long fellowship programs in Spine Section of Neurorsurgery Department since 1997. Total of 12 fellows from national neurosurgery departments has participated to this program.

Dr.Zileli and Spine Section of Ege University Neurosurgery Department have also been chosen as a host center for Spine Society of Europe Travelling Fellowship program since 2002. Five fellows from different countries have visited him and his department in 2002 and 2003. Forthcoming program in June 2004 will also be applied for Ege Neurosurgery Department.
